Attic ventilation is an intake problem, not a fan problem

Almost every underperforming attic in Brevard has the same story: exhaust was added, intake was not, and the assembly never moved the air anyone expected. A fan can only pull as much air as the soffits let in. Starve it of intake and it will find replacement air wherever it can, which usually means pulling conditioned air up through gaps in your ceiling and paying to cool your attic with it.

So the first thing we look at is not what is on the roof. It is whether the soffit vents are clear, and in a lot of homes they are not: insulation has been blown across them, or they were painted over, or baffles were never installed to hold the material back.

What a hot attic actually costs you

On a July afternoon the air above your ceiling can sit far hotter than the air in any room below it. Four things live in that heat: your roof deck and shingles, your ductwork, your insulation, and anything you have stored up there. The ductwork matters most for comfort, because conditioned air passing through a superheated attic arrives at the register warmer than it left the air handler.

Ventilation does not fix an under-insulated ceiling and we will not sell it as though it does. Insulation controls how much of that heat crosses into your living space. Ventilation controls how hot the attic gets in the first place and how fast it dumps that heat after sundown. They solve different halves of the same problem, and doing only one is why some homes stay warm into the evening no matter what the thermostat says.

Moisture is the quieter reason

Heat is what people call about. Moisture is what does the expensive damage. In a humid climate an attic that cannot move air holds it, and moist air against a cool surface is how you get staining on the underside of a roof deck, compressed insulation that has lost its rated value, and the conditions that let growth start on duct exteriors.

An attic that breathes is drier, and a drier attic keeps the insulation you already paid for performing the way it was rated to.

Why retrofit matters on a Florida roof

Most solar attic fans need a new hole cut in your roof. That is a new penetration, a new flashing detail, and a new thing to leak in a climate that tests every seam you own twice a day in August.

The FLEXLine is built to avoid that. iSolar describes it as the only patented solar powered retrofit ventilation fan system on the market, and the patent is on the retrofit: it installs into the roof or gable vents your house already has. The panel is a separate piece, so it can face the sun while the fan stays where the vent is, rather than forcing one compromise position for both.

If your roof is newer, or still under a workmanship warranty, that distinction is worth asking any installer about before they quote you. A fan that requires a fresh cut is a different conversation with your roofer than one that does not.

Sizing, and what the CFM numbers mean

The line runs 20, 50, 80 and 120 watts, rated by the manufacturer from 305 CFM at the small end to 1,720 at the large, across 6, 8 and 10 inch fan ducts. Larger attics, or attics split into separate spaces by framing, often want two smaller units rather than one big one, because ventilation is about moving air through the whole volume rather than hard at one point.

Treat published CFM as a lab figure. iSolar's own footnote describes it as a lab test against fully integrated units in typical attic conditions, and multi-fan output depends on how many units and what size. It is the right number for comparing models to each other and the wrong number to promise as what your attic will do.

What actually decides the size is your attic square footage, how the space is divided, and how much intake the soffits can supply. That last one is the constraint more often than the fan is, which is why we measure intake before recommending a unit.

Where the parts come from

iSolar Solutions is Canadian, based in Grimsby, Ontario, but its US warehouse is at 1735 Southland Avenue in Melbourne, which is inside the area we serve.

That matters more than it sounds. A 20-year limited warranty is only as good as the replacement part behind it, and on this product the part is a short drive away rather than a cross-border shipment. Ask any installer quoting you a solar fan where the warranty parts actually come from.

Questions

The ones we get asked most.

Do I need an attic fan, or better ventilation?
Often the second one. If the soffit intake is blocked, adding exhaust does very little and can make things worse by pulling air from inside the house. Clearing intake and getting baffles in is cheaper than a fan and has to happen first either way.
How hot does a Brevard attic get?
Hot enough that it is the dominant load on your air conditioner for most of the year. The exact number varies with roof color, pitch, and time of day, but the useful way to think about it is the gap: the difference between attic air and room air is what your ceiling insulation has to hold back every afternoon.
Will ventilation lower my power bill by itself?
It helps, and it is not the biggest lever. Ceiling insulation depth is. Ventilation reduces how much heat accumulates above the insulation and how long it lingers, which matters most in the evening. If you only do one thing, measure your insulation depth first.
The manufacturer's site says 16%. What should I actually expect?
Two different numbers, measured in two different places, and the difference matters. iSolar publishes a field test where air conditioners ran 16% fewer hours during the peak window and 10% fewer overall. That test ran in southern Ontario over the summer of 2024, third-party verified, on a Canadian heating-climate housing stock. We are not going to hand you a Canadian number for a Brevard roof. The Florida figure we would point at instead is the Florida Solar Energy Center's, which measured roughly 6% space cooling reduction from photovoltaic attic fans on a well insulated Central Florida home and called the cooling-season impact fairly modest. A fan is a real lever here. It is the second one, after ceiling insulation depth.
Does a solar fan need a permit in Brevard County?
Permit requirements for roof-mounted equipment are set by Brevard County and vary by the specific install. We confirm the requirement for your roof before any work is scheduled rather than after.
